The Arctic lands - North Atlantic with Frisland - 1562 - Zeno
Note:
To view available close-ups, click on the area you wish to see. A beautiful example of this scarce and important mid 16th century engraved map. With attractive recent full hand color. One of the classic depictions of mythical cartography. Noteworthy for the profusion of mythical islands, including Frisland. According to Brown (The World Encompassed), this is "one of the most interesting and controversial documents in the history of maritime exploration. More important than the map itself was the influence it had on contemporary minds". In 1558 Niccolo Zeno published a book in which he described the "discoveries" of his ancestors which "occured" over a hundred years earlier. The mythical islands seen here stem directly from the Zeno myth, and reappear in later 16th century maps of the north Atlantic, including those by such cartographers as Ortelius. The earliest obtainable edition is 1561, Venice. This example is printed the following year for the same work (Ptolemy Geography), same printer in Venice, very likely the same engraved plate as the 1561 map. In near fine, clean condition. Sheet
measures 12" x 9 1/2." Image area measures 9 1/2" x 7."
