North America - 1701
Note: To view
available close-ups, click on the area you wish to see. Issued
by Wells, 1701, London. (Issued in his "New Sett of Maps"). Appealing
visual example of this nice early 18th century folio sheet map depicting Map
paper is lightly toned, margins are a bit spotted and chipped along the edges
(as seen in photos). Centerfold split running about 1/2 way up from the bottom
has been repaired with old paper on reverse, then archivally taped for extra
strength. Minor overall paper flaws, few scattered very light spots as seen, but
really, despite the centerfold as described, a very appealing visual example
which will look spectacular once framed. Not perfect, but priced according to the Good+
to VG condition. Sheet
measures c. 23" x 19"; image area measures c. 19 3/4" x 14
3/4". An
uncommon map. A search of the cumulative Jolly/Pool map price record CD-ROM
(1983-2004) finds just 11 examples being offered in the past 21 years, only 1 in
the past 5 years! The most recent example sold for $2000 at auction in 2002 with
various condition issues (side margins underlaid with paper, bottom margin cut
to neatline, slightly browned). This example would seem to be comparable
overall, without the narrow margin or underlaid side margins, but primarily with
the centerfold repaired. See
