Russia -  c. 1762

Cartographer: Robert de Vaugondy
Full Title: Siberie ou Russie Asiatique, Tartarie Chinoise, Pays des Eluts et Isles du Japon
Published: c.1762, Paris

A fine 18th century map of Asia, done in a manner and engraving style quite unique to this era of cartographic knowledge and skill.  Includes the vast region of Russian Siberia, Chinese Tartary, Petit Bukarie, Corea, Japan, etc.  Of particular note is the incorrect rendering of Japan, typical for this 18th century date but nicely visible here. Also, an enormous and curiously delineated Jeso island above Japan, the western coastline being left dotted to indicate it was still cartographically unknown in a reliable manner.  Also depicts with various topographical notes the regions of Tartary, Siberia, and Bukhara.

Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) and his son Didier were descended from the N. Sanson family and they inherited much of Sanson's cartographic material. They were highly skilled engravers who placed an emphasis upon accurate and precise visual descriptions over the more commonly encountered tendency towards decoration and imaginary (unsubstantiated) geography.

In excellent, clean antiquarian condition with attractive full hand color on a c. 16 " W x 11 3/8 " H sheet (image size is c. 12 " W x 11 3/8 " H).

A beautiful example of this 18th century map.
