A well engraved 18th Century map of this area of Europe by Didier Robert de Vaugondy, son of the great French cartographer Gilles Robert de Vaugondy-- descendants of the 17th Century cartographic Nicholas Sanson family. All Vaugondy maps are historically significant for their synthesis of scientific and intellectual ideas, then prevalent at the Royal Academy of Sciences in Paris.

Their aim was not mere cartographic plagiarism in pursuit of profit, but rather a loftier combination of beauty with accuracy and usefulness. Thus, this concept of "Bel et Utile,"  thoroughly documented in Dr. Mary Pedley's comprehensive monograph on this remarkable cartographic family, is beautifully presented in Vaugondy maps, which (lucky for us) were widely published in the 18th century.

In excellent antiquarian condition.  On a c.11 1/4 " x 15 7/8"  sheet.  Image measures c. 10 " x 12."
