An engraved mid-19th century folio sheet map depicting the lakes and islands in both hemispheres with original full hand color. The sheet is divided into four sections: the top two depict "Lakes in the Western Hemisphere" and "Lakes in the Eastern Hemisphere", the bottom two depict "Islands in the Western Hemisphere" and "Islands in the Eastern Hemisphere" all in scale. Surrounded by typical scroll vignette.
An uncommon issue of this Colton map. The imprint on the map is 1855, but it is from an atlas with the title page dated 1865, so perhaps there are variations between this state and those actually published in 1855.
In VG+ clean condition, an area of very light staining in the far left margin is virtually unnoticeable once framed.
Sheet measures 15" H x 17 1/4." Image measures 13" H x 15 1/2."
