A beautiful hand colored 17th century map showing this region of Germany during the rule of the Bavarian dynasty. This area is considered the North Mark of Bavaria. Nicely detailed. Title sits within an interesting simple patterned cartouche at the bottom center.

What makes this map so interesting is it appears to be a very rare variant of the 1630 Mercator minor plates used in Amsterdam. This map (like many others we bought at the same time) are all but identical to the 1630 plates except the cartouches have been entirely re-worked. Indeed, there is clear visual evidence of this reworking from the plate visible on close inspection in the title cartouche. Very scarce (late) 17th century map.

A nice example with lovely and bright full hand color; numerous important towns are highlighted by tiny cathedral symbols. A compass rose at the top right. Map sheet measures c. 6 7/8" H x 8 3/8" W, image area c. 5 3/8" H x 7 5/8" W.

In VG+ to near excellent clean condition, a desirable, rare and lovely early 17th century map of Germany.
