A delightful early 18th century map of this strongly fortified Prussian town, Stralsund. In the top left corner an angel holds the map's key, telling the names of the ports, on a scroll. From this key, we see that Rugen Island is located to the far right of the strait on which Stralsund is located.  Below, a warrior in armor reclines against a cannon,  writing "Perfer et Obdvra" across a tablet.  In the upper right corner are early initials in ink which as seen in the photo is now a mild smear across the corner; this smear does not block any object from view. Map sheet exhibits light mild scattered foxing and browning, mostly in the margins. With full original hand color. Would seem to be a rather uncommon plan, issued for a very scarce atlas.

Stralsund has been the site of many battles and we are not sure which battle this depicts. Based on the other information accompanying the map, we are inclined to suggest the battle occurred in 1713, shortly before this map was issued. Since 1815, the defensive works of this town have been enlarged and this is now the strongest town belonging to Prussia.

Map measures c. 12" W x 7 7/8" H (image area measures c. 10 1/4" W x 6 1/4" H)>
