Western U.S. - 1864 by Johnson
Note: To view available close-ups, click on the area you wish to see. Wonderful folio sheet (centerfold as issued) lithographed map of the western states with an imprint date of 1864 across the bottom. The title page of the atlas, however, is 1869, so hard to say if this map is an 1864 or a revised 1869 version. Includes California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona & New Mexico, all depicted relatively early in their statehoods and at a transitional time in the evolution of the counties. Nicely lithographed with full original full hand color. Tremendous amount of detail, including Spanish trails and early railroad lines. We observe a clearly marked "Pony Express route" cutting across the states as well as a "proposed Atlantic & Pacific" railroad line. "Fremont's route 1844 & 1845" is marked. There are also numerous mentions of "Gold" to be found. Colorado still has a very large Indian Reservation (county) noted, and many many Indian tribes are located across the Western states. In mostly clean condition, some dampstaining along the edges, a small short closed tear at bottom margin just touching into the scroll border, neatly repaired with archival tape and invisible from the front, but all this is outside the printed map area, which is mostly quite clean, meaning once framed the map will look fine and nice. Please note that the glare on the right side is from the light and is in no way on the map. Sheet size measures c. 25 1/2" W x 18 " H, image area c. 23 1/4 " W x 17" H.
