Van Diemens Land, Tasmania - 1780
To view one of 4 available close-ups, click on the area you wish to see. A fine and detailed 18th century map issued shortly after Capt. Cook had Furneaux visit Tasman's Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) in 1773 in the "Adventure". During this visit he named Adventure Bay, and indeed we see here an inset of this at the upper left. Furneaux concluded there was no strait between Van Diemens Land and New Holland. However, the ship astronomer Bayly insisted that there were coastal islands and a strait. Bayly was proven correct by the ship's surgeon, George Bass who sailed through the strait which bears his name - some 20 years later (this information was largely found on the Capt. Cook Society UK website- visit it for further details). We see on this chart the precise wanderings of the "Adventure", with sounding depths and a clear track. A large compass in the center lends the map a decorative appeal. A fine 18th century map relating to Australia and Capt. Cook. In VG+ condition, beautifully
hand colored- a pleasing example. Sheet measures 18" W x 12 1/4" H ,
image measures 13 1/2" W x 9 1/4" H.
