"Marmarica Nuova Tavola," issued in 1564, Venice, by Girolamo Ruscelli (c.1504-66). An attractive and beautifully engraved 16th-century map of Northeastern Africa, centered around northern Egypt. This map cites numerous mountains, rivers, and lakes. The Arabian Gulf is cited in the right side, right next to the Nile. This charming map shows rivers, as well as their basins, and marks the location of one of the oldest communities in the world. The map is framed with longitudinal and latitudinal degrees at which this area is located.

In VG+ to near excellent antiquarian condition, a mostly clean and fresh example and strong plate impression from the uncommon 1564 Ruscelli Ptolemaic atlas. Original fold line, as issued. Sheet measures c. 11 7/8" W x 8 7/8" H, image measures c. 9 3/4" W x 7 1/4" H.

Ruscelli was the editor of numerous editions of Ptolemy's "Geographia" in the 16th century, the first edition being issued in 1561 and going through several re-issues thereafter. These newly composed maps by Ruscelli were largely based upon the slightly earlier 1548 Ptolemy Geographia which had been issued by Giacomo Gastaldi.(see Moreland & Bannister, 1983).
