A beautiful and fascinating late 16th century map of the Hainault region of Belgium/ Holland. With countless place names, rivers, forests and tiny renderings of towns and castles scattered throughout. A fine strap work cartouche at upper right, strapwork distance scale at left.

In VG+ to excellent antiquarian condition. Original fold line as issued. With wonderful beautiful  hand color. Sheet measures c. 13"h.  x  17 1/2" w. Image measures c. 9 1/4" h.  x 13" w.

We found the following brief description of Plantin on-line: born 1514- died 1589, highly skilled printer. Plantin left his native France for Belgium because of religious persecution. In Antwerp his work, at first as a bookbinder, began in 1549. He began the production and publishing of books in 1555. His establishment continued to work until 1867 and is now preserved as the Plantin-Moretus Museum. Plantin was the leading printer of the second half of the 16th cent., and his books are admired for their accuracy and their typography. His equipment included types designed by Garamond and Granjon.

See "Guicciardini Illustratus", Deys, Franssen, van Hezik, et. al. Publ. by Hess & De Graff, 2001, Netherlands - pg. 231- item 2.1- first state. Map is illustrated with descriptive annotations, dimensions, etc. Evidently this map was based upon the one by Jacques Surhon which was published in Ortelius' "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" issued a few years prior to this one.

In VG+ to near excellent antiquarian condition, beautifully hand colored. A very pleasing example.
