A beautiful early 19th century engraved map of the continent of South America. Also shows part of Central America including what is now Panama. Shows the continent with various countries and regions broadly labeled. Also gives hundreds of major cities, particularly along the coast. Topographically quite informative as well, with indications of major mountain ranges (including the Andes) and major rivers. With lovely hand color, accentuated with outline hand color. In VG+ to near excellent antiquarian condition, with some minor age toning to the edges of the margins. Sheet measures c. 10 3/8 " W x 17 " H, image area measures c. 9 1/2 " W x 13 7/8 " H. A pleasing Tanner map. We found the following brief biography of Tanner on-line: TANNER, HENRY SCHENCK (1786-1858). Henry Schenck Tanner, cartographer and statistical geographer, was born in 1786 in New York. He established his well-known publishing company in Philadelphia and was the first person in the United States to publish a map of Texas, using Stephen F. Austin'sqv 1829 map. His map was published in 1830 and went through eight editions. Tanner is best known for his New American Atlas, published in five parts from 1818 to 1823, with a last edition published in 1839.
