Floridians - 1774

A wonderful 18th century engraved view depicting natives of Florida, or, Floridiens. The first European to land in Florida was Ponce de Leon, who arrived in 1512 and whose quest it was to find the Fountain of Youth. In 1819, Florida was acquired by the United States through a treaty with Spain. This image, therefore, shortly predates the height of conflict between the United States government, Native Americans, and the Spanish. We found a site that professes, "In the early days of its existence, the fledgling United States government carried out a policy of displacement and extermination against the American Indians in the eastern US, systematically removing them from the path of "white" settlement...It was clear that the US wanted the Spaniards out of Florida and was willing to consider any means, including warfare, to acquire the rich land." The image depicts three native Floridians in the foreground: a male, a female, and a small child. They are shown wearing their native dress, and the child is shown completely naked. In the background are a number of dwellings as well as other Floridians going about various activities. A large palm towers from the left of the image. Features a nice level of detail in the engraving and beautiful, expert hand color. In VG+ to near excellent condition, with a lovely wide margin making this image perfect for framing. A very uncommon imprint of this view. Sheet measures c. 10 1/4" H x 8 1/4" W, image measures c. 7 5/8" H x 5 3/8" W. Ordering: Please use the Buy Me button below, or phone the shop to order this map.
