"Tunisia" issued in 1683, Paris, by Mallet.  An attractive little 17th century engraved view of the city of Tunis, capital of Tunis, one of the former Barbary States of North Africa.

This wonderful engraving of Tunis contains two views: the top, a bird's eye view of the city and the bottom, a view from the mouth of the Mejerda River; both showing ships. The city of Tunis is a place of great antiquity and has been the setting for many important events throughout history. During the Punic wars it was repeatedly taken and retaken. In 1206, it became an absolute sovereignty and became notorious for its piracies, which subjected its inhabitants to severe chastisements from British powers. Mallet, the cartographer, was a well traveled military engineer and geographer who worked in 17th century France under King Louis XIV.

 In VG+ to near excellent antiquarian condition. Sheet measures 5 3/8" W x 8 1/4" H. Image measures 4" W x 6 1/4" H.

A charming engraved 17th century Mallet view, with lovely hand color.
