Kasan, Russia - 1839
"Kasan No. 2," issued 1839, Barcelona, engraved by Cholet. A lovely, engraved view of Kasan, Russia. Kasan was originally inhabited by Finns, who were vanquished by the Tartars. In 1552, Ivan Vassilivitch II took Kasan, ousted the Tartars and annexed the territory to Russia. This wonderful view of the city in its antiquity shows a number of buildings, many with wonderful spires. A rustic looking encampment, the masts of several ships and two figures appear in the foreground. Features a nice degree of detail, particularly in the spires and windows. With lovely hand color. In VG+ to near excellent antiquarian condition, with some extremely light foxing in the margins (not detracting). Sheet measures c. 7 7/8" W x 5" H; image area (including text) measures c. 5 7/8" W x 4 1/2" H. Rather uncommon. Ordering: Please use the Buy Me button below, or phone the shop to order this map.
