Sofala, Mozambique - 1683
"Sofala" issued in 1683, Paris, by Mallet. The city of Sofala was once the the capital of the Portuguese possessions in Africa. It is in present-day Mozambique, on a river of the same name (but here called "Cuama"), and consisted chiefly of huts, a fort, and the residence of a governor and garrison. This birds-eye view is nicely detailed, with lots of tiny people in the foreground, and the fort clearly labeled. A.M Mallet, the cartographer, was a well traveled military engineer and geographer who worked in 17th-century France under King Louis IV. In VG+ antiquarian condition with beautiful hand color. Sheet measures 5 3/8" W x 8 1/4" H. Image measures 4 1/8" W x 6 1/2" H. Ordering: Please use the Buy Me button below, or phone the shop to order this map.
