A fascinating, original Civil War map depicting the Seat of War in Kentucky. This image is a full page from a Harper's Weekly, published in 1861. On May 20 of that year, the legislature of Kentucky, the native state of both Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, resolved to be neutral. On September 3rd, however, Confederate troops entered the state and took up occupation of Hickman and Columbus, until Sept 18 when the legislature took steps to remove them. Despite neutrality, thousands of Kentuckians served in both Union and Confederate forces. This wonderful wood engraved map of Kentucky shows countless place names as well as major rivers and mountains. Features an inset of Louisville and its environs. An original Civil War period item, worthy of framing. Harper's Weekly was one of the major sources of news for many American households in the 19th century. A weekly publication, during the Civil War it employed dozens of artists in the field. T he result of this is a remarkable visual archive of topical events, including important battles, leaders, social events, city views, nautical views, maps, etc. These are "original wood block engravings" which many art institutions & museums recognize as artwork and collect - perhaps the best known examples are wood engravings by Winslow Homer and Thomas Nast.
