Dresden - 1628
Note: To view one of 3 available close-ups, click on the area you wish to see. "Von der Chursuerstlichen Statt Dresden," issued 1628, Basel, by Sebastien Munster. An early 17th-century birds-eye view of Dresden, with a splendid level of detail. A key across the bottom identifies and locates 6 points of interest, such as the castle and churches, few, if any of which are still standing, since the city was leveled during WWII. Shows the Elba river and the surrounding landscape, including hills and fields. Features a lovely decorative shield or coat of arms above the city. This wonderful woodblock engraving has an almost medieval quality, which is one of the great appeals of Munster maps and views. In VG+ antiquarian condition with a few light spots in the areas outside the view, nothing detracting. Accompanied by text on the front and reverse of sheet, as issued. Overall, quite an acceptable example with minimal show-through. With full hand color. Sheet measures c. 8 3/4" H x 14 5/8" W, image of map (including title & key) measures c. 6" H x 6 1/4" W.
