Yakutsk, Siberia - 1839
"Jakoutsk," issued 1839, Barcelona, engraved by Lalaisse. A lovely, engraved view of Yakootsk (also spelled Yakoutsk, Yakutsk, and Jakutsk), a city in Russia. Yakootsk was once a great commercial emporium of East Siberia, capital of the province of the same name. It lies on the Lena river, on a plain surrounded by hills. Yakootsk was known for its export of pelts, as well as the fossil ivory, which was found buried deep in the alluvium of the Lena. This 19th-century view of the city shows the river, plains, and hills that make up the landscape. A number of buildings are depicted, as well several small ships. In the foreground stand several figures going about various activities on the flats. If you look carefully you can see several figures half-submerged in water; perhaps they are fishing or even collecting fossil ivory. Features a very nice level of detail in the engraving, especially evident in the spires and windows of the city's buildings. With lovely hand color. In VG+ to near excellent antiquarian condition. Sheet measures c. 7 7/8" W x 4 7/8" H; image area (including text) measures c. 5 7/8" W x 4 5/8" H. A rather uncommon image relating to Russia early in the 19th century.
