"Carte De La Louisiane, Et De La Floride," c. 1780, Paris, by R. Bonne, the important French engineer and cartographer (1727-1795) who succeeded J.N.Bellin as Hydrographer at the Depot de la Marine (1773).
A pleasing 18th century map of this region in the US, issued just about the time of the American Revolution. Quite fascinating, as the boundaries of the states are completely different from today. For instance, Georgia extends up the coast close to Charleston, S.C. The western boundary stops short of the modern day River Apalachicola. North & South Carolina also display interesting boundaries, the large bulbous extension in Western North Carolina being the most pronounced. Florida extends westward to encompass Mobile, almost to Biloxi. The only city located on the entire Florida coast is St. Augustine.
Much else of interest, such as a profusion of Indian names, early towns and outposts, etc. A pleasing example of this copper engraved 18th century map with beautiful hand color.
In VG+ to near excellent antiquarian condition (original fold lines as issued) on a c. 10 1/4 " W x 16 1/4" H sheet. Image measures 8 1/4" W x 13" H. A much nicer example and almost certainly a variant engraving to others which look very similar as we continually learn every time we compare two seemingly identical Bonne maps (only to discover in fact they are impressions taken from different plates, completely re-engraved). With a very reasonable reserve.
