"Carte des Isles qui sont a l'Embouchure de la Riviere de Canton- Kaart van de Eilanden aan den Mond der Riviere van Kanton", issued 1749, La Haye by de Hondt for Prevost (engraved by Schley after Bellin). A detailed mid-18th century depiction showing the islands around the entrance to the Chinese coastal area around Canton river and Macao. Wonderfully detailed, showing many small islands, such as Macao (which has sounding depths off it's southern peninsula tip near the city of the same name), Tanco island, Island of Sancian and many smaller unnamed ones. A remarkable early visual record of the trading coastline when China was a distant mysterious empire, known almost exclusively by its trading cities.
Originally issued for one of the scarce volumes of the Dutch editon of Prevost's "L'Histoire Generale des Voyages" published in the mid-18th century. In near excellent antiquarian condition with beautiful full hand color, on a c. 10 1/4 " H x 13 1/4 " W sheet, images area each c. 8 1/4 " H x 12 3/8 " W (w/ original fold line as issued, certainly not detracting). A scarce and relatively early depiction of the islands around Macao and Canton - A splendid example as well.
