Afrique; publ. c.1780 in Paris by the important French engineer and cartographer Rigobert Bonne (1727-1795), who succeeded J.N.Bellin as Hydrographer at the Depot de la Marine (1773).

A well engraved and sparsely detailed 18th century depiction of the continent, showing vast blank spaces, long vanished Kingdoms (such as Mujaco, Monoe Mugi, Anzico, etc.) and naming the Hottentots of Southern Africa as the only native tribe on the continent. Arrows in the oceans most likely indicate the monsoons. (a variant of Norwich's #103- this one having several rivers depicted in South Africa for instance and the title area lacking attribution, etc.).

In VG+ to near excellent, clean antiquarian condition (a couple of paper creases which do not detract in the least) with attractive full hand color on a c. 14 3/4 " W x 10 1/2 " H sheet (image size is c. 12 1/2 " W x 8 1/4 " H).

A superior and very pleasing example of this well known 18th century map.
