Tertes Arctiques.- Groenlande; issued 1683, Paris by A.M.Mallet, the well traveled military engineer and geographer who worked in 17th century France under King Louis XIV. This charming map of Canada from the St. Lawrence river and Newfoundland up to Baffins Bay, including Greenland attached to "New Northwales", as seen early in the 18th century, is from his scarce monumental work "Description de L'Univers". A pleasing 17th century map of this Arctic region with 2 tall masted sailing ships seen at the southern tip of Greenland. A remarkably shaped Baffin Island is here called "Comberlants Isles", with the Cape Southampton shown as a peninsula rather than correctly as an island.

Surely not a common Canadian Arctic map, apparently the first issue of it, and very desirable thus.

In near excellent antiquarian condition with beautiful full hand color, on a c. 5 " W x 7 3/4 " H sheet, image area c. 4 " W x 5 3/4 " H (not counting text at top of neatline).
