West Africa Coast 1746 Bellin

A detailed mid-18th century depiction of this region of the west coast of Africa, naming numerous long vanished Kingdoms, such as Ghinala, Nalous, the islands of Bussy, Bissao, Boulam, and numerous other smaller ones. Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-72), was an important French cartographer who spent over 50 years at the French Hydrographic Service and was appointed the first "Ingenieur Hydrographe de la Marine", as well as later in life "Hydrographer to the King". Bellin is best known for his high quality French sea charts and his finely engraved world maps for Prevost's "L'Histoire Generale des Voyages". In VG+ to near excellent antiquarian condition, beautifully hand colored on a c. 10 " H x 14 1/4 " W sheet, image area c. 8 " H x 10 1/4 " W.
