Rare 1568 Munster of Germany Holland & Austria
Sebastien Munster, "Germania". From the rare 1568 Italian edition of Cosmography printed in Basel. A charming 16th century woodcut illustration of Germany printed with north oriented towards the bottom. Encompasses the regions of modern day Holland (so named here), Brabant, some of France, down to Austria (which is at the top left of the map).
A most charming mid-16th century cartographic representation, stylized and abstracted in an almost medieval manner. Around the image is extensive text describing it. In VG+ to near excellent antiquarian condition, a gentle uniform toning to the still very supple and sound handmade paper (superior, in fact, to the paper often found on Munster maps).
Quite charming and very uncommon on a c. 8" W x 11 7/8" H sheet (engraved map image c. 5 1/4" W x 4"H).
