In VG, mostly clean and fresh condition, this weekly issue of Harpers is from Saturday, July 5, 1862. Volume 6, No. 288. This fine heavily illustrated newspaper focuses on one of the most important issues of the time period, the Civil War. Depicted on the cover are two half page sketches of the Levee at Memphis, Tennessee, and a general view of Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. Other illustrations include: a full page of three sketches around Southern towns, a half page of rebels firing into a railway car, Winslow Homer's full double page wood engraving entitled, "The War for the Union 1832- A Cavalry Charge," two half page sketches of the army of the Potomac, a bird's eye view of the city of Charleston, SC. Text is about issues concerning the Civil War, and also included is a continuing chapter of "No Name," a story by Wilkie Collins. An interesting and historical look into America's past.
