A delightful mid-16th century wood block map of Sardinia, from the monumental work by Sebastian Munster "Cosmography". From a very rare Italian edition of 1568, printed by Henrigo Pietro in Basel. A splendid map of Sardinia from the rare Italian edition of 1568.
The wood block image displays a wonderful medieval style and vitality quite particular and unique to wood engraved maps of this vintage.
Quite a scarce map, a nice impression, mostly clean condition, well preserved for its sheer age. With beautiful, expert, full hand-color. Because the map was printed on a nice heavier paper, there is just a most minimal amount of "show through", much less than typically seen on Munster maps.
On an c. 8" W x 11 3/4" H sheet, (image size is c. 6 " W x 10 " H).
