" La Suede Par le S. Robert de Vaugondy Géog?ord? du Roi. de S.M. Pol? Duc de Lorr? et de Bar et de la Société royale de Nancy et Censeur Royal," issued Paris, 1778. A fine and very decorative 18th century map of Sweden and Finland, with a bit of Poland and Russia, done in a manner and engraving style (engraved by E. Dussy) quite unique to this era of cartographic knowledge and engraving skill. A large decorative pictorial strapwork title cartouche at upper right.
Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) and his son Didier were descended from the N. Sanson family and they inherited much of Sanson's cartographic material. They were highly skilled engravers who placed an emphasis upon accurate and precise visual descriptions over the more commonly encountered tendency towards decoration and imaginary (unsubstantiated) geography.
In near excellent antiquarian condition with beautiful full hand color on a c.11 1/4 " H x 16 1/2 " W sheet (image size is c. 9 3/8 " H x 7 1/2 " W).
