Note: to see 3 available close-ups of this picture, click on the area you wish to see. A scarce mid-18th century map depicting California as an island. Issued Paris, 1758 for Buffier's "Geographie Universelle...", printed by Pierre- Francois Giffart. Appears to be a late and/or variant issue of McLaughlin #72 ("The Mapping of California as an Island"), the words in the title cartouche divided differently, the page number at upper left changed, no place names on the island of California, etc. Quite a scarce variant. On a sheet 7 " W by 8 " H with the image measuring 5 3/8" W by 6 7/8" H. VG overall with original fold lines, a short seam split at upper left, top left margin trimmed close as issued.
