A wonderful and very scarce mid-19th century lithographed image of the Moon's rotations around the Earth, with the most remarkable and optically pleasing feature of being lined with a hand colored tissue backing. The heavy card image has the central earth circle cut away as well as all the circles of the moon (and the Sun), which have then been covered over with a sheet of tissue paper which has been printed and hand colored in a precise manner so as to produce an optical effect of luminosity when held to light. Similar in nature to a variety of optical effect printed books and toys which have been produced in Europe for hundreds of years and all of which are now scarce due to their inherently limited nature and are avidly sought after.
The image is bracketed on top and bottom by extensive text relating to the Moons rotations.
Quite uncommon and in a fine state. With only minor and light age wear.
