Scotland c.1778 by Vaugondy
A fine and decorative 18th century map of Scotland by Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) and his son Didier. The Vaugondy's were descended from the N. Sanson family and they inherited much of Sanson's cartographic material. They were highly skilled engravers who placed an emphasis upon accurate and precise visual descriptions over the more commonly encountered tendency towards mere decoration and imaginary (unsubstantiated) geography. This fine map is characterized by a charming visual mid-18th century style, expertly and very attractively hand colored. Pedley #53- dated as 1778. Note: to see 3 available close-ups of this picture, click on the area you wish to see. In near excellent, clean antiquarian condition with attractive full hand color. On a c. 17 ” W x 11 1/4 ” H sheet (engraved image size is 8 3/4 " x 9 1/4 "). Ordering: Please email us or phone the shop to order this map.
