Saltzburg,  Austria  1630 by Mercator/Jansson

Cartographer: Mercator (minor)/ Jansson
Full Title: "Saltzburg et Carinthie"
Published: Amsterdam, 1630

"Saltzburg" by Mercator/Jansson, published Amsterdam,c.1630 for Gerard Mercator's "Atlas Minor" with maps engraved by Johannes Jansson (more commonly known as Jan Jansson). Jansson (1588-1664) was born in Arnhem and married the daughter of the important cartographer and publisher Jodocus Hondius, eventually settling in Amsterdam as a book publisher. From about 1630-1638 he issued numerous editions of the Mercator/Hondius atlases to which his name was added. This map is from the first Dutch edition of that series of miniature atlases (and also the largest in size), a most decorative and well engraved map with a strapwork title cartouche, strapwork distance scale and beautiful (later) full hand color which is absolutely expert and attractive. Jansson's maps are very similar to Blaeu's (from which they were often copied) and many consider them more decorative. (see Koeman II- Me197). A scarce and desirable map of this Austrian region, numerous important towns are highlighted with tiny cathedral symbols, etc. In VG++ to excellent clean antiquarian condition (the gentle aging actually lends the map a nice patina of authenticity).

Note: to see available close-ups of this picture, click on the area you wish to see. There is generally a close-up, usually including the cartouche or other points of interest.

In excellent, clean antiquarian condition with attractive full hand color.  On a c. 9 ” W x  6  3/4 ” H sheet (engraved image size is  7  1/8 " x   5  1/8 ").
