America - 1817 by Thomson
A fine oversize folio sheet engraved map of North & South America by the important Scottish publisher John Thomson. Of particular note for it's beautiful original full hand color heightened in outline. The interior of North America is mostly blank, reflecting the lack of accurate topographical knowledge available at the time of it's issuance. A clear combination of rivers and lakes indicates the possibility of a NW Passage across Canada. The "Stony Mountains" (Rockies) show a curious break, as if they opened up to permit easy passage across them. (?). A fine early 19th century map of the Americas, vastly under appreciated given it's beauty and date. Note: to see available close-ups of this picture, click on the area you wish to see. There is generally a close-up, usually including the cartouche or other points of interest. In excellent, clean antiquarian condition. On a c. 28 1/2 ” W x 21 ” H sheet.
