A handsome two volume set of mid- to late 19th century fine half leather bindings. Gorgeous shelf appearance with spines in blindtooled and gilt adorned compartments, gilt title and raised bands. Half leather and marbled paper covered boards exhibit minor shelf wear. Front joint leather of volume one suffers a minor short split and some very minor chipping at spine tail. Joints on volume two split near tail. Bindings remain tight, sound and clean. t.e.g. 

Mostly clean internally. Steel engraved frontis portrait in volume one suffers light dampstaining near the tail. Marbled endpapers. Bookplate in volume one "Alliance Francaise... Diplome Superieur 1929 Mademoiselle Gloria dominguez. Prix offert pra: Mr Louis Herbin". Front hinge of volume one cracked. 

In VG+ clean condition. A handsome set of fine bindings for the great political thinker, Charles-Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu. Scarce. 

Books measure c. 6 1/2" x 9 1/2". 512 pp.
