Revolution Francaise - 1823
An early 19th century five volume set of period 1/4 leather bindings. Ornately gilt and blind tooled spines in six compartments, gilt title and volume number on contrasting black leather labels, leather rubbed at spine ends, chipped at head of volume four. Marbled paper covered boards are gently rubbed w/ some corner wear (corners lightly bumped). Several joints chipped at ends, front joint of volume one cracked, front joint of volume two cracked at tail. Bindings tight and sound. Marbled edges. Mostly clean internally w/ scattered foxing; profusely illustrated w/ engraved plates, several folding. We count one hundred four (104) engraved plates (complete, thus), most with tissue guards, depicting portraits, scenes and art relating to the French Revolution; this count includes 23 in volume one (six folding), 16 in volume two (one folding), 23 in volume three (one folding), 18 in volume four (one folding) and 24 in volume five (one folding). Volume frontispieces depict a portrait of the author, "Premiere Fete de la Liberte a l'Occasion des Swisses de Chateau-Vieuxe", "Siege et prise de la Ville de Lyon", "Assassinat du depute Ferraud dans la Conention nationale" and "Assassinat des plenipoteniaires Francais a Rastadt." Text in French. Marbled endpapers. In VG to VG+ condition w/ a profusion of engraved plates. According to our research, this five volume set appears complete (lacking the sixth volume which appears to be a 208 page index). Books measure c. 5 3/8" x 8 3/8."
