The Spectator - 1832
A fine early to mid-19th century full leather binding. Smooth spine in compartments w/ patterned gilt bands and central gilt devices as well as gilt title; spine leather gently rubbed but, overall, an attractive shelf appearance. Paneled boards are ruled in patterned gilt and patterned blindtooling w/ minimal wear. Lovely patterned gilt inner dentelles. Binding tight and sound. a.e.g. Mostly clean internally w/ light scattered foxing confined mostly to the first and last few pages and page margins. Steel engraved frontis and half title page for each volume engraved by William D. Smith. Volume one frontis portrait depicts Joseph Addison, half title page depicts "Sapphira confronting Rhynsault in presence of Charles the Bold". Volume two frontis depicts "Rosicrusius's Sepulchre" w/ half title page "-These are my companions". Former owner's signature in light pencil on volume one frontis. Pages 449-456 in volume one torn at corner w/ some missing text. Yellow endpapers. In all, a fine 19th century leather American binding w/ nice steel engraved plates.
