Life of Christ - c. 1870
With a prefatory notice by The Rev. Henry Stebbing, D.D. to which is added A meditation on the love of Christ, and the Christian laid forth, by Joseph Hall, D.D. with The Golden Grove, and the worthy communicant, by Jeremy Taylor, D.D." 723 pp. A handsome large mid-19th century period half leather binding. Spine in six gilt-ruled compartments with raised bands and gilt title, leather is gently rubbed at spine ends and bands with a few minor scuffs. Half gilt-ruled leather beveled boards are mostly clean, black cloth shows some minor rubbing with edgewear and leather is rubbed and frayed at one corner. Binding on this heavy book is tight and sound (a scarcity for a large religious book of this vintage). a.e.g. Text block exhibits light scattered foxing and age-toning. Nearly 50 full page detailed steel engravings plus a folding map "Connected with the Acts of the Apostles". Engravings, with tissue guards, depict stages of Jesus' life and his miracles as well as the lives of his apostles. Steel engraved frontis depicts "Our Redeemer - Engraved by John Roger after the original by Guido (?)" with Jesus wearing the crown of thorns; half title page depicts the angel appearing to three Sheperds from Luke chapter 11, verse 13. In VG antiquarian condition, appears to be a scarce edition of this text with lovely steel plates. The Reverend John Fleetwood is best known as the author of a history of the Bible and The Christian Dictionary. "The Life of Our Lord..." was first published in London in 1768; the first U.S. edition was in 1800. Rather than a historical biography, this present work is a devotional meditation on the life of Jesus and his apostles. Book measures c. 11 1/4" H x 9 1/2".
