les Contes Drolatiques - 1855
An attractively blindtooled mid-19th century publisher's period brown cloth binding. Blind-tool ruled smooth spine displays gilt title and author, gilt cherub wearing a war helmet near spine tail; cloth gilt is lightly rubbed, but still very attractive. Ornately blindstamped boards are mostly bright and clean. Binding tight and sound. Well preserved example. Mostly clean internally with some very minor light scattered foxing at foredges. Profusely illustrated with hundreds of fantastic and disturbing illustrations by Dore. Frontis half title page depicts "ont este reimprimez", a beautiful woman being fawned by a mob of men while a cherub controls the woman's puppet strings. Previous owners inscription, "G. W. Cottrell Jr. from Philip Hofer. Cambridge. November 1940", on f.f.e. Text in French. In all, a wonderful and rather uncommon mid-19th century edition of Balzac's "Drool Stories" illustrated by the very talented Gustave Dore. Book measures c. 8 3/8" H x 5 3/8". 615 pp. Ordering: Please use the Buy Me button below, or phone the shop to order this map.
