Headwaters of the Mississippi - 1894

Author: Captain Willard Glazier
Full Title: Headwaters of the Mississippi; Comprising biographical sketches of early and recent explorers of the great river, and a full account of the discovery and location of its true source in a lake beyond Itasca. Illustrated
Published:

Chicago and New York: Rand, McNally & Company, 1894

An outstanding example of this fine late 19th century gilt publisher's period blue cloth binding. Gilt US flag shield with title, gilt banner with authors name and gilt native American in a canoe down the smooth gilt-ruled spine- very bright and attractive. Beveled boards display embossed map showing Lakes Glazier and Itasca- top board is embossed in silver and gilt, bottom board embossed in black. Cloth displays remarkably little wear, what little there is confined mostly to the bottom edge. The book is actually very clean, almost new appearance. Black speckled edges.

Very clean and tight internally with full page maps and engravings from photographs. Frontis depicts the author, William Glazier, holding a rifle. Fifty-four illustrations in all.

It would seem to be nearly impossible to locate another example of this book in a nicer, cleaner condition than the one offered here. Superior example.

Book measures c. 7 3/4" H x 5 3/4".   527 pp.
