The Children of Dickens - 1926

Author: Samuel McChord Crothers / Illustrated by Jesse Wilcox Smith
Full Title: The Children of Dickens
Published:

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926

An early 20th century publisher's period pictorial binding with matching pictorial dust jacket. Gilt title, author and illustrator on smooth spine. Top board depicts Smith's illustration, "Tiny Tim and Bob Cratchit on Christmas Day"; cloth on bottom board exhibits light splotches, corners gently bumped. Dust jacket is slightly waterstained along the spine but this is very light, minor chipping along jacket edges. Binding split after sixth signature but remains sound. Fore-edges deckled.

Text block mostly clean, light foxing in the margins of the ten color, full page Jesse Wilcox Smith illustrations. These Smith illustrations depict Dickens's characters with the usual charming quality associated with Smith's creations. Pictorial endpapers in yellow and brown depict "The Old Curiosity Shop". Small bookshop tag, "The Old Corner Book Store, Inc. Boston, Mass." on f.f.e.

Such a charming early 20th century pictorial binding with the scarce dust jacket. It is unusual to find the dust jacket of this wonderful story in this well-preserved a condition. Jesse Wilcox Smith is renowned for her nostalgia-inducing illustrations in children's books.

Book measures c. 9 5/8" H x 7 1/2".  259 pp.
