Simply an outstanding gorgeous example of this beautiful mid-19th century plate book. A very handsome, heavily ornate original mid-19th century black half leather binding with wonderfully floral patterned blue cloth boards. Smooth gilt-ruled spine is ornately gilt and embossed, with gilt title and author; leather is clean and supple, gilt remains bright. Half leather boards are gilt ruled, beautiful deep blue cloth intricately designed with embossed floral vines. Board cloth is perhaps gently rubbed with some minor light edgewear, but this is minor and the binding remains tight and sound.

Mostly clean internally, any minor light scattered foxing confined to the margins. Profusely illustrated throughout with 34 fine full page steel engraved plates. Twelve of these full page plates are vibrantly hand colored; these depict the varying military dress of the African military regiments found in this country at this time. All plates with their tissue guards. Beautiful vibrant large folding hand colored map of Algeria by Ambroise Tardieu with insets of the cities "Oran", "Constantine" and "Alger" bound at rear.

In all, a beautiful mid-19th century text/ plate book in a wonderful period binding; we have found it to be quite rare in such well preserved condition. Appears that all plates are present and tightly bound in. Book looks as if it has passed down to the present day in a time capsule- all but immaculate, remarkably clean, tight and still fresh.
