(Please note the spine is dark red and clean- the digital photo would seem to indicate a glare/ discoloration on the spine which does not exist on the actual book).

Found here in a handsome, gilt adorned 19th century maroon 1/2 leather binding. Spine in six-gilt ruled compartments, raised bands with patterned gilt rules on either side, gilt title. Old maroon leather and cloth boards are still mostly bright and clean; boards exhibit minimal edgewear. Leather along joints gently worn and flaking, but holding firmly as are the hinges. Binding overall remains tight and sound. Marbled edges.

Text block mostly very clean, square and tight, well preserved. With nine also quite clean large folding engraved maps at rear. These maps are bound as a group at the rear and are all larger than the book when unfolded. Also laid in at front is a very large b&w engraved folding map entitled "General Map of England and Wales", which is clean but split into pieces (almost certainly repairable), measuring c. 18" H x 16". This map was not included in the previous editions and there is no mention of it on the title page (perhaps it was supplemental?).

According to the title page, this printing had an entirely new set of maps engraved for it plus much newly revised and supplemental information (numerous new roads, the newest measurements, etc.). For the collector, this would seem to indicate a complete and noteworthy variation from any previous editions and thus desirable as a then newly much altered publication. Uncommon to encounter it looking thus, so clean and well preserved, with all the maps present.

Book measures c. 8 1/2" H x 5 3/4".   715 pp plus 41 pp appendix.
