House of Seven Gables - 1852
Two books bound in one: "The House of the Seven Gables. A Romance." by Nathaniel Hawthorne. London, 1852: G. Routledge & Co. 248 pp. "The Ogilvies. A Novel." by "The Author of 'The Head of the Family,' 'Olive,' etc. London, 1855: Chapman and Hall. 313 pp. A handsome, very appealing mid-19th century period half leather binding. Spine in six gilt-ruled compartments with raised bands, gilt titles on contrasting black label; gilt rubbed but leather smooth and supple. Half paper covered boards show slight rubbing and very slight edgewear typical of shelf wear (the book actually appears much nicer in person). Binding overall is very tight and sound. Mostly very clean internally. Previous owner's inscription on f.f.e: "Sally C. Wakeman - from Daddy's library - H. Gilbert Crowder". Another inscription is found the second endpaper, "Anna McCall - (?) - October -/ 56". A nice early British trade printing of this classic Hawthorne tale. Appears to be quite scarce as well. Book measures c. 6 5/8" H x 4 1/2". Ordering: Please use the Buy Me button below, or phone the shop to order this map.
