Little Boy's and Girl's Library - c.1850
A charming and elaborately embossed mid 19th century red pebbled cloth binding. Spine shows a gilt title wrapped in gilt vines being climbed up by a boy and girl; gilt gently rubbed, cloth worn away at ends. Front board displays a central gilt scene of a boy and a girl sitting on a bench and reading, a dog and rose bush in the background, similiar illustration blind-stamped on rear board. Boards ornately blind-stamped with ivy encircling the central figure; cloth displays soiling as seen, rear board displays signs of old mildew staining at head. Text block cracked down center, otherwise firm. Mostly clean pages internally, some damp-staining throughout the text block to about 1/3 way down from the top and in the inner corner, but this does not really interfere with the fifteen wonderfully hand colored full-page illustrations. Frontis is a man falling from a horse-drawn carriage, caption reading, "On went the horse, at a great rate, till at last John was thrown out and broke his leg and arm by the fall." This appears to be two books in one from a now - scarce, popular series, "Little Boy's and Girl's Library". The first "Gift to Young Friends" includes "The Good Man of the Mill", "A Sad Tale", "All Good Things Come from God", "The Lost Purse", "Rose, and her Bird", "The Great Dunce", "Self-Will", "The Careless Boy", "The Two Good Boys" and "The Way to Save". The second half, "The Happy Changes", is a selection of vices and their consequences. Covered are "Pride...as Exhibited in the History of Little John and Henry", "Passion...as Exhibited in the History of Paul Pepper", "Idleness..." etc. Clearly, moral tales inducing the children of the mid 19th century to behave. Appears to be quite a scarce juvenile, particularly one with such a profusion of hand colored plates. Book measures c. 5 1/2" W x 6 5/8" H. 128 pp. Ordering: Please use the Buy Me button below, or phone the shop to order this map.
