Natural History of the Human Species - 1859

Author: Lieut.-Col. Chas. Hamilton Smith
Full Title: The Natural History of The Human Species, its typical forms, primaeval distribution, filliations, and migrations. Illustrated by thirty-four coloured plates, with portrait and vignette."
Published:

London, 1859: Henry G. Bohn

464 pp plus 34 plates, 27 of which are nicely hand colored. Engraved portrait frontis of Smith and engraved half-title depicting a "Blackfoot Indian"

Mid-19th century publisher's embossed red cloth. Title and author in gilt on spine with three gilt devices - one being an eight-point star medallion, gilt gently worn. Front board has central gilt device and a blindstamped pattern around the extremities. Rear board similarly blindstamped. Evidence of repair to splitting cloth at joints and spine extremities. Internally very clean; with 27 boldly hand colored plates depict ethnicities ranging from the "abnormal race" of the "Bushman girl" and "Bushman" to the North American natives to the Caucasian Race which is labeled "Greatest Development - Slavonic Noble". You really have to see some of these ethnic plates with their comments to believe it. An informative, yet wholly biased view of the history of "man's evolution" as seen in the middle of the 19th century.

Book measures c. 4 1/2" W x 7 7/8" H.

This edition is not to be confused with others of the same title which do not have all these hand colored plates. We did not find another example with these plates for sale on the internet- perhaps they were only issued in this edition? Really, this is a color plate book.

Plates are all clean and bright. Rare thus.
