M'Fingal, A Modern Epic Poem - 1856
183 pp. A charming mid- 19th century poetry book. Smooth spine is ornately gilt with Victorian patterns, title and author in gilt; spine extremities a little chipped and worn. Boards are elaborately blindstamped with a similar Victorian pattern - a central device is surrounded by intricate floral and geometric patterns. Text is clean and attractive with some very minor (almost non-existent) spotting; frontis wood engraving depicts a humorous scene of "Battle of the Kegs". We note that the text on every page is enclosed within a double ruled box. Binding is still tight and sound. A Colonial American Revolutionary War satire poem based on the Scottish "Ossian" in a period binding which is still remarkably clean and bright. Book measures c. 6 1/3" W x 9 1/3" H.
