373 pp. An appealing mid- 19th century full period decorative green pebble cloth. Central decorative gilt devices down the spine, title and author in gilt; wear with some small patches of cloth loss along the front joint and to the extremities. Boards blindstamped with central circular device with title and authors initials, boards outlined with rectangular pattern and circular devices in corners. Very clean internally; 8 woodcuts throughout with tissue guards. Title page alternates red and black. A very nice and clean example of this uncommon and historically important first edition, second issue. Reference- BAL #8781. Book measures c. 5 1/8"W x 7 3/8"H. Oliver Wendell Holmes was a celebrated physician and esteemed professor of anatomy and physiology at Harvard University. in 1838 he was appointed to the chair of Anatomy and Physiology in Dartmouth College. He held this position until 1847, when he accepted a similar position at Harvard, which he then held until 1892. All of his literary work was performed in addition to his labors as a college professor for almost 47 years. This work was a collection of humorous essays and is one of his most famous works.
