Colton's Atlas - 1881
A very rare imprint of this well known atlas. Based on our research, it appears Colton's Atlas was issued only twice in the 1880's (in 1881 and in 1886.) The ABPC Cumulative auction records CD-Rom disk reveals 1880's editions to be far scarcer than their better known 1850's predecessors. Indeed, the 1881 edition has been sold at auction only once (that we could find) in the past 25 years! With many fine detailed folio sheet transitional maps of the western states, including Texas. Includes a List of Maps of the World, Contents (Descriptive, Historical and Statistical), Commercial Signals for Pilots and Flags, a List of Principal Rivers and Lakes in the world, Illustration of Mountains and Rivers (shown), a list of Principal Mountains in the World, Illustration of Comparative Size of Lakes and Islands, General View of the world with Descriptions and Illustrations. Beautiful detailed maps and descriptions fill the center pages of this atlas. The back of the book has lists including a List of Population of States and Territories in 1870 (by counties), List of Populations of the Principal Cities, Towns, and Villages in the United States for 1870, List of the General Population of the US and Territories, List of Extent and Population of Different Countries of the World and a List of Names of the Principal Cities of the World with their Approximate Population. Contents are remarkably clean, fresh and bright. Binding shows some wear and fraying to the cloth of the front board, as seen in photo, but the leather spine is still very well preserved and appealing. Slight stain to right front board, with slight spot of loss to top right corner. In VG+ to near fine condition overall, gently worn (far less than typical however), binding tight, internally remarkably clean. Measures approx. 15 1/4" x 18." In our opinion having seen hundreds of these types of 19th century atlases over the years, this is about as nice an example as one could hope to encounter. Internally, almost as fresh as when it was issued. Ordering: Please use the Buy Me button below, or phone the shop to order this map.
