A massive 2 volume quarto set with c. 119 fine full page steel engraved portraits of a wide variety of eminent Americans of the mid-19th century back to the late 18th century, such as George Washington. A superb grouping of famous men with facsimile signatures below each portrait. The portraits are of the highest quality of the day. Descriptive text accompanies each one.
Bound in publishers 3/4 embossed leather, spine in 6 compartments, raised bands, gilt titles, blind stamped devices in the compartments.
A mostly clean and fresh set, with only light overall scattered foxing which is much less than is possible for this set due to the paper it was printed on.
A massive work- a feat of engraving and in very nice condition.
